    Laboratory Work. Bacteriological examinations for infectious diseases are carried out at the Public Health Laborator}^ Town Hall, with the exception of the tests for Enteric Fever and Puer- peral Fever, which if required are done at the Public Health Laboratory, Manchester. The outbreak of Diphtheria during the latter part of the year led to a tremendous increase in laboratory work, the total number of specimens examined during the year being 1,811, as compared •with 857 in 1927. The results of the specimens examined during the year may be summarised as follows :— Results DISEASE Positive Negative Diphtheria 319 1121 Enteric Fever 0 1 Tuberculosis . . 103 267 Public Health (Infectious Diseases) P.egulations, 1927. The above regulations came into force on the 1st January, 1928, and revoked the Public Health (Pneumonia, Malaria, D_vsentery, (ix.. Regula- tions, 1919. There were no notifications of Dysenter}’ during the 3'ear, but 52 cases of Pneumonia and 1 of .Alalaria were notified. Tests for Infectious Diseases. No use was made during the j’ear of the .Schick and Dick tests for Diphtheria and Scarlet Fever respectiveljq but both these tests were used to some extent during 1929, at the Borough Lsolation Hospital. BOROUGH ISOLATION HOSPITAL. Hospital Accommodation. The ho.S])ital accommodation was in.sufficicnt during the latter half of the 3’car when Diphtheria and Scarlet Fever were both prevalent. The wards at that time were overcrowded, and it was found necessary to make a selection of the cases in order to use the available accommodation to the best adv'antagc. Double infections also created great difficulties owing to the 1. rk of isolation wards or cubicles in sufficient numbers to deal with that type of case.
