What you'll do

Take part in a workshop in which actors will read scenes from a film script about the life of novelist and diarist Fanny Burney (1752 – 1840). The scenes relate to Fanny's experience of having a mastectomy without anaesthetic in 1811. They illustrate her struggle to take control of the situation and the role of her male surgeon.

During the workshop process the actors will analyse the scenes they have read. At the end, there will be an opportunity for you to ask them questions.

The performance will take place on the stairs in the Reading Room and you will be able to sit down and watch as much or as little as you'd like.

In addition excerpts from Fanny's writing and other relevant material will be available around the Reading Room for you to read at your leisure.
