Shiloh Pepin is an 8-year-old girl with sirenomelia, an extremely rare condition in which her legs are fused together like a mermaid's tail. It is commonly known as mermaid syndrome. Very few children survive to birth with this condition let alone beyond birth. Shiloh was born with just a quarter of a kidney, virtually no large bowel, one ovary and no genitals or rectum but she has beaten the odds and has made it to 8 years old. Due to her kidney problems she has not been able to consider leg separation surgery - detailed x-ray footage shows how her physiology is constructed. However now her kidneys have settled she can finally consider surgery but she is completely reluctant.
