At the time, there was a campaign called "Go to the mountains and go to the countryside" ("Shang shan xia xiang"). Members of the 'educated youth' ('Zhi shi qing nian') were encouraged to work in the countryside and they underwent re-education as peasantry, often in very hard conditions and with no preparation. In this print two young women trained as farmer doctors (Barefoot Doctors, 'Chi jiao yi sheng') are walking in the mountains to collect flowers and herbs. While having a rest for food and water, they are reading and learning the Daily Newspaper ("Ri bao"). These educated youth members and farmer doctors contributed significantly to life in the countryside, where there was lack of proper medicines and doctors
