HRH Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (1844-1900)

Manuscript diary of the illness of HRH Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Reigning Duke of Saxe Coburg and Gotha (1844-1900). The diary covers the period April 12th-27th during which Prince Alfred sailed from the Mediterranean, where he was stationed as Admiral C. in C., to the Channel, and describes fever and disturbed digestion.

The diary was compiled by Naval Fleet Surgeon George McLean (d. 1920), and passed to Sir Oscar Clayton (1816-1892), Surgeon Ordinary to the Duke of Edinburgh. On Clayton's death it was passed to his successor as Surgeon Ordinary to the Duke, Sir William Hickman (1837-1897) F.R.C.S., M.R.C.P. (Edin.), from whose papers it was acquired. McLean was later Inspector General of the Naval Medical Division.
