Lettering
The water from pots in which Ojuoro is growing is used as a lotion for sore eyes &c. It usually teems with larvae, & without them some believe (?) the water possesses less virtue.
The lettering is hand-written in black ink onto the mount
Notes
Contained in an album of photographs describing conditions of hygiene in West Africa. The album was presented to Sir William John Simpson (1855-1931) by R.H. Kennan, and probably by Simpson to the Wellcome Institute in 1911. Simpson, knighted in 1923, was Professor of Hygiene at Kings College, London, and lectured on hygiene at the London School of Tropical Medicine, 1898-1923. He investigated plague and health conditions in many countries
