About this work

Description

Nobilis Johannis Kornreutheri, ordinis St. Augustini Prioris, Magia ordinis artium et scientiarum abstrusarum. Anno 1515. Illustrated with 5 figures of Sigils in black and gold, and one of the Magic Circle: the names of the Spirits in gold or black and gold. Pasted on to the inside of the upper cover, and on to both sides of the second leaf, are cut-down leaves of an MS. in Arabic characters. The Latin title itself appears to have been laid down within another leaf of Arabic MS., as it is surrounded by Arabic script. The two cut-down leaves on the second leaf of the MS. contain drawings of circular amulets in black and yellow. It seems possible that this is the actual MS. mentioned by G. C. Horst in his 'Zauber-Bibliothek', 1821, Vol. I, pp. 157-176, and especially pp. 158, 159. The title given corresponds verbatim, and the number of leaves (16 of text) is the same. In this passage the MS. is described as 'in schlechtem Latein, und zwar mit arabischen Buchstaben auf seidenes turkisches Papier geschrieben'. Horst states that he possesses a copy: his remarks relate to a MS. existing in 1749.
