About this work

Description

The text of the MS. is written in a neat Secretary hand: and the Index - which omits the letter R - is perhaps by a different hand, and is in italic. In Welsh throughout. The outer margins of the first 8 ll. are frayed and damaged.

Leaf 3: LHYFR, O, FEDHEGINI / AETH, A, PHYSYGW / RIAETH LHYMA DABL Y LHYFR HWN, FAL I / GALHER YN BAROD GAEL POB RHYWbet / ag sydh yndho ef, megis pob dolen dani / i rhif, a phab tu dolen dan i mark / y tu cynta or dholen, sydh / ar lythyren. A. ar ail tu / ar lythyren. B. megis i / bo parottach ir dar / lhennydh gael y peth / a dhamuno i weled / yn y lhyfr hwn / o waith W.G.

Fol. 1 DECHREVAD / llyfr veddyginiaeth. /// Rhaag chwydd mewn troed nev / esgair new le arall o natvr Briw nev / yssig. 137v ...pob meddodd / swpper hwyr kysgv yn y fan gwedi. / (By a later hand) finis.

The fragment of the first preliminary leaf contains a receipt, in English, for a purgative drink: it is signed by Dr. Stafford Price, who is probably the person named in Alumni cantabrigienses: a biographical list of all known students, graduates and holders of office at the University of Cambridge, from the earliest times to 1900 by John Venn and J.A. Venn as having matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1711, aged 18. The verso of this leaf contains part of a poem in Welsh by a different 18th cent. hand. Added among the preliminary leaves are scribblings, names of owners, and a few receipts in Welsh: these are mainly by 18th cent. or early 19th cent. hands.

  • Leaf 2 'Gabriel Salusbury, Denbigh'; 'Jonathan Williams Jeyner [? Junior]'; 'John Jones of Denbigh 1735' (a); 'John Evans'.
  • Leaf 3 (T.p.) 'Mr' Richard Glyns of Edernion booke' (b).
  • Leaf 6 'Edward Williams of Denbigh'; 'Edward Jones of Denbigh'.
  • Fol 14v 'William Edward Jones of Thomas of Llanraiadr Denbigh'; 'Gabriel Salusbury, his hand'.
  • Fol 15 'This book has being [sic] in the sarvise [sic] of the Reverent Mr Edward ffoulkes, Doctor of Divinity (c), and Mr Robert ffoulkes, doctor of ffisick (d) In the County of Denbigh aforesaid Gentleman and Esquire to William Jones of Denbigh'.
  • Fol 15v 'Edward Williams of Denbigh'; 'Robert Jones Jeyner [? Junior] of the said County of Denbigh'.
  • Fol. 57 'Edward Jones' [Cf. Leaf 6].
  • Fol 67v 'David Jones is this book' (e).
  • Fol 127 'Dewi Fardd' (f).
  • Of the above names, only a few can be identified with any certainty:

  • (a) Jones (John) [1700-1770], Dissenter of Carmarthen.
  • (b) Glynn (Richard), Rector of Llan Ederne, 1637. [Cf. Venn].
  • (c) Ffoulkes (Edward) D.D. [1697-1740]. [Cf. Venn].
  • (d) Ffoulkes (Robert), M.D. [1695-1771]. [Cf. Venn].
  • (e)(f) Jones (David), [1708-1785], poet and antiquary: his Bardic name was 'Dewi Fardd'.
