After a painting painted for the Marquis de Fontenay, French ambassador in Rome. Thomas Walker, the owner at the time of this print, is the first (of four) known British owner of the painting. He was Surveyor General and Member of Parliament for Wimbledon (1738-1748), owner of Warren House (subsequently Cannizaro House), Wimbledon, and of a town house in Clifford Street, Mayfair; he was a collector of paintings. The painting was subsequently acquired by the Barber Institute, Birmingham University (Cecchi, loc. cit.)
