About this work

Description

This episode of Panorama looks at the realm of postnatal depression and how the NHS manages to cope with the 1 in 10 new mothers who suffer from the condition. We hear about the different kinds of post-natal depression from an extreme version of 'baby blues' to the most serious kind of acute post-natal depression which leads to a kind of psychosis. Women who have suffered with the illlness describe how it made them feel and how they were treated by health workers and mental health staff. It is clear that mother and baby units at psychiatric hospitals are vital to help mothers recover from the depression following childbirth. There is also interesting information about how a mother's depression affects babies and children in later life, especially boys who seem particularly vulnerable to their mother's mental state.
