Biographical note
The Medical Officers of School Association (MOSA) was founded in 1884 in response to "the need for the general adoption of more definite rules for guarding our great educational establishments from the outbreak and spread of preventable infectious disease". Currently MOSA is a professional association concerned with the provision of medical care in (mainly independent) schools. Members seek to provide care in the areas of pupils' physical health , mental health (intellectual, psychological, emotional, spiritual and social health) and societal health (the environment in which the young person lives). Most of MOSA's members are General Practitioners who act as Medical Officers to independent schools in their practice area.
Ownership note
The bulk of the records were held at West Yorkshire Archives Service on behalf of MOSA for several years (WYAS reference C724), having been transferred there for safe-keeping by the MOSA Honorary Archivist Dr Peter McWilliam. Since the archive does not relate specifically to the West Yorkshire area and is UK-wide in remit, MOSA and West Yorkshire Archives Service agreed in 2012 that the archive be transferred to the Wellcome Library.
