Description

Half-length directed to right in oval frame facing left of front, wearing armour, lace collar and the Garter star. Around the portrait, a rough frame with spiky tufts and four laurel twigs. Above, the papal tiara and crossed keys, referring to James's Roman Catholic faith: they are carried within a cloud which crosses the rectangular edge of the picture. Below, two broken anchors, presumably referring to some aspect of his abdication: one of the anchors is marked with fleurs de lys, the other with crosses
