About this work
Description
The seventh in an 8-part series investigating diseases from around the globe. Each programme features a single disease and looks at attempts to develop treatments that are effective and affordable to the world's poor who make up the majority of the victims. This part features the disease Bilharzia, also known as Schistosomiasis. If left to run its full course, the disease is fatal, but often it is mild and people don't know they have it; moreover it is treatable and a campaign against it has begun at Lake Victoria in Uganda; the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI). The work of the SCI team is shown in detail, in particular their work with vulnerable schools.
