About this work
Description
Narrated by David Walliams, this lively documentary looks at how television has represented and treated disability over the years. The programme contains much varied archive footage and a wide range of contributions from comedians, TV writers and critics. Perhaps most importantly, disabled people, most of whom have made it into the limelight because of their disability, describe changing attitudes over the years and how they view comedic and other representations of disability. Shockingly, it wasn't until 1992, in the soap opera Eldorado, that a disabled actor played a disabled character on British TV. It is clear from this documentary that disabled people are keen to take on these roles and to be part of TV culture on their own terms.
