About this work

Description

The circle of Lord Burlington, of which Campbell was a member, wished to establish the architectural supremacy of Inigo Jones over Christopher Wren, the Surveyor-General of the King's Works. This design was therefore attributed to Jones, but was actually by his assistant and nephew-by-marriage Webb

The extensive sculptural work with which this building is adorned in the print never materialised. Apart from carving in the left of the two pediments, nothing else was carried out. Although this is the King Charles Block, Hulsbergh has shown a statue of Queen Anne in the central niche

Jones inven: ; Ca Campbell delin. The main lettering is repeated in French The plate is dedicated to George II, when Prince of Wales, for whom Campbell worked at Leicester House
