About this work

Description

Greek and Latin scholar, editor of Aristotle's Nicomachean ethics (1865) and translator of Euripides' Bacchae (1872). Drummond professor of political economy at Oxford University 1862-1868 and 1888-1890. Liberal Member of Parliament for Southwark and subsequently for Bermondsey 1880-1885. Author of A history of agriculture and prices in England from the year after the Oxford parliament (1259) to the commencement of the continental war (1793) (7 vols.) and other works on economic history.

Portrayed as described with (in his later years) a distinct stoop in his shoulders "which had the effect of projecting his head far forward, so that his face, with his magnificent brow and piercing eyes, seemed to be entering a room before his body crossed the threshold" (Newcastle Leader, 14 October 1890, cited in the Oxford dictionary of national biography)
