Description
This darkfield micrograph shows the gut and malphigian tubules (kidney) of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster.
The Malphigian tubules (named after the Italian anatomist who identified them, Marcello Malpigh) are thin tubular structures that arise from the midgut-hindgut junction of many arthropods and carry out an excretory function.
