About this work

Description

The Pulse is a television series focusing on the patient and practitioner. This programme looks at back pain. In the UK, an average of 230,000 people are off work every day because of back pain. One company whose workers perform many manual tasks employ a chiropractor; their employees now see back pain as a temporary nuisance rather than a routine-affecting condition. The difference in the way the NHS and private medicine tackle the problem is looked at; the NHS refers to physiotherapists, whereas chiropractors and osteopaths are more expensive but argue that they have a more specialised knowledge. It is recommended that people with back pain should go to their GP first, as there may be causes other than injury and posture, such as period pains, cancer or a psychological reason, that should also be ruled out. It is also recommended nowadays that people be active and take a lot of exercise to combat back pain, instead of taking bed rest.
