Description

Breve de Medicar piaghe [etc.]. With some medical receipts in Italian. Written in a small gothic current hand, 26 lines to a page. Paragraph marks, and some capitals in red. Fol. 1 (Title, probably by a 17th century hand) IL / TESORO DE POVERI. Below, a pen-drawn scroll, inscribed 'IN HERBIS VE / RBIS SC[ILICET] [?] LAPIDIBVS VI / RTVS REMANET': under this a bunch of grapes with leaves, etc. over a heart: under this again a nude human figure holding up a scroll inscribed 'QVI NON / EST / EXPERTVS / PAVCA / RECOGNOSCIT. 2 Amico carissimo secundo la toa domanda te scriuo / uno breue de medicar piaghe fresche et vecchie et / apostematione cancri fistole dislocatione rotur de ossi / duncha Intendi che la prima Intentione che sia ne le pi / aghe he de sadargle ... 23, line 24 Unguento gratia dei per maistro golfredo e per maistro / Iacobo da forli ale fistole. [Nicolaus Praepositus: 'Quid pro quo']. In loco de brotano pigla origano. 67 In loco de satirione pigla seme da ricola. The water-mark, a flower with five petals on a stem, seems to be a variant of Briquet's No. 6443, which he assigns to Rome 1498 or Rome and Naples 1502. This MS. almost certainly formed part of an original larger volume, which contained the two 'Jacopo' MSS. Nos. 377, 378, of which the second has a title 'Thesaurus pauperum'. In this MS., as noted above, this title seems to have been added in the late 16th, or early 17th cent. on fol. 1; but, though it contains surgical remedies as in MS. No. 378, it is entirely different. It also in no way resembles the work with that title by Petrus Hispanus, of which there are several 15th cent. printed editions. Of the names mentioned in the text on fol. 23 only Jacobo da Forli can be positively identified as Jacobus Foroliviensis (de la Torre), who died in 1414. Produced in [Milan?].
