Description
Journalist Ellene Mocria looks at the practice of child marriage in Ethiopia and its consequences. The doumentary follows a 12 year old Ethiopian girl who leaves her home in order to marry a man she has never met. Although this practice was common and culturally acceptable in Ethiopian at the time, through the testimony of several women we understand that this led to a terrible toll on their physical and mental well-being. In particular, childbirth at a young age can cause life-changing physical damage (double incontinence). There is one clinic in Addis Ababa, a Fistual Hospital, which repairs the damage caused by traumatic births which have left many women doubly incontinent, shunned and in poverty. Some women who have received treatment reveal how their lives have been changed - there are graphic images of gynaecological surgery.
