[59]-112 Note: As house-surgeon to the Lincoln Asylum, Hill was one of the first to propose the total abolition of all restraint for the mentally ill. Although his system met with great success he was so ridiculed and abused for his views that he was eventually forced to resign. John Connolly visited the Lincoln Asylum in 1839 and was inspired to introduce a similar system at Hanwell Asylum
