About this work
Description
The first in an 8-part series investigating diseases from around the globe. Each programme features a single disease and looks at attempts to develop treatments that are effective and affordable to the world's poor who make up the majority of the victims. This part features malaria. We see how malaria is transmitted from the mosquito and hear death toll statistics. Daily life in Africa is shown and health worker Caroline Maxwell describes her work with villagers and her frustration that anti-malarial drugs are not available to poor communities. Chris Henshall introduces us to a project he is working on with Medicines for Malaria, which aims to provide a more affordable treatment for malaria.
