Lettering on verso: Matene Te Nga was born circa 1800. Oldest chief of the Ngatimaru tribe, Hauraki Gulf. Was a defender of the Totara Pa, attacked by Hongi Hika, October 1821 - and 1000 of the defenders slain - "Matene Te Nga", then a dashing young warrior, led to safety a band of women and children. Gilbert Mair N.Z.C. wrote artist "Embalm his memory". Signed.
