Description

Commonplace book containing notes and extracts on legal forms, medical and cookery receipts, gardening, history, prayers, painting, etc. Compiler's holograph MS. The foliation is continuous from 1 to 172, but the text runs from Ff. 1-101, and beginning at the other end of the volume, from 171 to 101. Contents: Forms in Law (Ff. 1-30); Miscellaneous receipts (30v-36); School-master's notes (36v-39); Prayers, religious notes, hymns, etc. (40-74); Miscellaenous receipts (75-79); Historical notes, place-names, etc. (79v-101); Power (Mrs. M.) A collection of choice receipts in cookery and husbandry: transcribed from Mrs. Mary Power of Uttoxeter, March 9 1712/13 (171-157); Changes on 5 bells (156-150); Notes on gardening, etc. (149-132); Notes on painting, colours, drawing, etc. (139-109); Notes on the Months; with a few domestic and cookery receipts (109-101). 'Thomas Watkins Anno 1710' is inscribed on Fol. 1 and at the end of the Forms in Law, 'Stow July 17. 1732 Thos. Watkins.' On Fol. 6 is the signature of L. P. Sinnott, which is repeated on Fol. 171 with added date 1847. Produced in Stow?

1 volume 1 l. + 172 ff. 8vo. 151/2 × 10 cm. Original calf binding, worn. Ff. 6, 27, 28, 60, 126 have been torn out. Fol. 172 is pasted down on to the inside of the lower cover.
