About this work
Description
Right, Jupiter on his throne watches while a woman (Juno?) and Cupid each puts to the yoke a pair of doves standing on the globe. They are watched by personifications of Peace (holding fasces), Concord (holding caduceus), and Plenty (holding cornucopia), and by gods including Vulcan with Neptune and Mercury with Saturn. Left, Mars (held by Venus), Apollo and Minerva chase away Discord, Rage, Envy and Deceit, represented as hostile to good government. Above are Scorpio and Libra as signs of the zodiac, Diana driving the chariot of the moon at upper left, and Bacchus with Ceres. Far right, two women being addressed by Juno, one of whom is identified in the lettering as Iris
They would therefore refer to the double marriage on 25 November 1615 of Elizabeth of France to the Prince of the Asturias (later King Philip IV) and of Anne of Austria to King Louis XIII
