Description
A review of the surface of the developing bird, with shots of the blood system under the microscope. Diagrams explain the development of the chick embryo. Techniques of dissection and observation are shown. We see the appearance of the bird at 1.5, 2.5, 3, 5, 6, and 8 days; 1 day before hatching. The formation of membranes is also shown. 3 segments.

Segment 1 An animated diagram is used to explain the anatomy of a bird egg. A comparison is made between pictures of embryos of a bird, pig and human. A drawing of a chick embryo is shown and the anatomy pointed out. A beating heart of a chick embryo is shown. Scientists are shown removing a living chick embryo from an egg and sealing it in a glass chamber. A mixture of live action and stop motion animation is used to show this process. Segment 2 The circulation of blood begins in the chick, and this is shown in an animated diagram. The embryo is shown after 60 hours of growth. After 3 days, the body gradually becomes 'C' shaped and the limb buds appear. The embryo is shown after 5 days. The membranes develop and the embryo is gently rocked in amniotic fluid. Segment 3 The yolk-sac encloses and digests food for the growing embryo. The embryo now grows rapidly. It is shown after 6 days. After 8 days it begins to look like a bird, and the feather buds form.
