About this work
Description
In 1989 Cheri Robertson, then aged 19, was involved in a car accident which left her completely blind. Two years ago she became a human guinea pig for an artificial sight system, developed by pioneering neurologist William Dobell. Here, she and her mother describe Cheri's accident and their trip to Lisbon to undergo surgery to give her a bionic viewing system. However the experiment is only half-finished as only 10 of the possible hundreds of electrodes are active; furthermore Dobell died suddenly in 2006 and the project hasn't received further funding, leaving Cheri in a limbo. 18-year-old Evan Reynolds lost his arm in a car accident and has now been given a bionic arm, controlled by impulses from his brain, the most cutting edge prosthetic technology ever achieved. We see his new arm being fitted and him learning to use it in daily activities.
