Episode described in Bible. N.T. Mark 6.17-29. A hand holding the hilt of a sword is visible in the bottom-left hand corner. Bacchus holds a thyrsus, an ancient fertility symbol. The head of the stag held by Bacchus represents Pentheus in Euripides' 'The Bacchae', who is torn to pieces by the Bacchae
