Description

De urinis Actuarii Joannis Zachariae filii ... libri VII: Ambrosio Leone Nolano interprete. Abbreviated and translated into Flemish.

Medical receipts, etc. in French, Latin and Flemish.

The original foliation is incorrect after fol. 34 where a leaf has been dropped: a corrected numbering has been added.

On fol. 5 a coloured pen-drawing of a graduated urine-glass: fol. 8 figures of weights in yellow and back: fol. 24 astrological signs, etc. Some decorated initials in black and yellow. On the second leaf are pasted three small woodcuts, two of the 'Astrological Man' and one of the Planetary Circles: there is a space for a fourth woodcut, now lost.

On fol. 4 are two signatures: 'Toussaint regnault chirurgien servente [sic] dans lille' and below 'Françoise Regnault serviteur [sic] de son pere demeurant a lille'.

On the first leaf there is a note in pencil 'Ex[emplaire] ayant appartenu à Rabelais. Quaritch'. As Rabelais is believed to have died in May 1554 (cf. 'Biographisches Lexikon'), and our MS. is dated 1560, this statement seems to be erroneous.

1 volume 89 [113] ll. folio. 291/2 X 201/2 cm. Original vellum binding, with two leather ties, defective. 24 leaves are wanting between fol. 78 and fol. 102. Ff. 11, 19, 22, 23, 25 are mutilated: last 10 ll. frayed at the margins, etc.
