About this work
Description
Described by Baudet in the lettering: This landscape acquaints us with the places in which Polyphemus lived in Sicily. The freshness of the waters, the shade of the woods, and the sight of meadows intermingled with agricultural land, and bordered by mountains, rocks and the sea, render the view of this countryside most agreable, though a bit wild. One sees there with pleasure three young fountain nymphs, half naked and crowned with reeds, whom two satyrs want to ambush. A river-god is seated on the other side. Further away, farmhands work and dig the land; young nymphs bathe in a stream. A shepherd watches a flock of sheep. And Polyphemus, seated on a high mountain, the peak of which he covers, looks towards the sea and believes that by his singing and by the sound of his rustic pipes he can charm the beautiful Galatea, with whom the poets claim that he was in love
