Description
Autograph letter, signed, to "Mrs Scott" (Ann Scott, wife of Alexander Scott (1805-1866). Principal of Owens' College). The letter discusses the case of a Mrs Glover of Bury, suffering from a uterine tumour, and the possibilities of her treatment by Dr Protheroe Smith at the Women's Hospital, Soho Square, or by means of mesmerism; Gaskell quotes the opinions of John Malcolm Ludlow (1821-1911), the Christian Socialist, who was also involved in the case.
