Description
Xiuzhen miyao, a gymnastic (daoyin/qigong) text of unknown origin, was rediscovered and published with a preface by Wang Zai in 1513 (8th year of the Zhengde reign period of the Ming dynasty). It records 49 exercises. This illustration depicts Ba Wang san fa (Dispersal method of the Conquering Overlord), a technique used to treat whole-body cramps, seasonal cold damage, etc. It is practised as follows: Taking up a stable standing position, one advances the left foot and clenches both fists. One circulates Qi for 12 breaths. One then repeats the procedure advancing the right foot.
