About this work

Description

Blotter (originally inserted in a professional medical magazine) advertising Thermogene medicated wadding (cotton wadding soaked in "vegetable essences" (eucalyptus? menthol?) to "warm away the pain") to a French market. It was also manufactured in England by the Thermogene Company Limited. It could be wrapped round the chest, neck, stomach or knee as required and was promoted for easing pain, inflammation, rheumatism, lumbago, neuralgia, chest colds, bronchitis, pneumonia, sore throat, laryngitis, tonsilitis, hoarseness, stomach chill and gastric influenza. The illustration is "d'après Kappiello" and shows a pierrot type in a viridian body stocking hugging 2 large pillows of Themogene to his chest and is exhaling a jet of flame against a background graded from dark crimson to white.
