Louis Theroux visits one of the best schools in America for autism, the Development Learning Centre in New Jersey, and talks to parents and autistic children about their lives. It is clear that the levels of autism vary widely from child to child and that dealing with the daily reality of severe autism is both dehumanising and exhausting for parents. Of particular interest is the fact that the programme features many older autistic children rather than very young children - the reality of size and hormonal changes clearly makes a difference in how they fit into family life.
