Description
Transmission electron micrograph of the
epithelial surface of the peripheral cornea.
These epthelial cells have very few organelles
apart from nuclei. They adhere to each other via
numerous desmosomes - the black spots along the
interfaces between cells. The corneal surface is
to the left and microvilli are visible on the
surface of the outermost cell. This cell is
approximately 3 microns deep, from the surface to
its contact with the subjacent cell.
