About this work
Description
To mark the 60th anniversary of the National Health Service, this informative programme looks back to the beginnings of the NHS. Archive footage and eye witness accounts of pre-NHS healthcare are included as well as some brief dramatic reconstructions. Pre-NHS, healthcare in the East End slums of London was covered by 1 GP to every 18 000 people whereas in the leafy suburbs the ratio was 1 to 250. The programme charts in detail the life and work of Bevan to change these unfair statistics and the battle he fought against Churchill as well as the intense resistance of the British Medical Association headed by Charles Hill.
