About this work

Description

The deathly figure of Sarah draped in a cloak which is bunched above her head asks 'Furies - Wheres my 10000 (pounds)'. She holds two labels, inscribed 'Taken a place', and 'Voted for ye C-t'; in her other hand is a label, with 'and you too 20000 (pounds)' which points towards a portrait of Philip, Lord Chesterfield on which she tramples. Pitt sits before a table on which stand two lit candles, a letter inscribed 'letter to Wm-P-(itt) by T.H-y Esqr', a letter directed 'To Wm. P-(itt) Tr(easure)r. of I(relan)d', and another letter on which Pitt writes 'An answer to J.H.' His head is marked 'Hanover T-(urnip)S'. Flashes of lightning crash through the window towards Pitt. A clock sits on the wall behind at quarter past twelve. A picture has been torn out of the frame on the right wall. A statue of Queen Anne stands on the far right. Pitt was made Vice-Treasurer of Ireland on Feb 22 1746. Sarah had bequeathed money to Pitt (to help him prevent the ruin of his country) and Chesterfield (for her obligations) on her death on 14 October 1744
