Jung, Carl Gustav (1875-1961), letters to Baynes, Helton Godwin (1882-1943)

This collection consists of 25 letters (17 ts signed, 2 ts with ms addenda, 6 autograph), 1936-1943, from C G Jung to H G 'Peter' Baynes, a British Jungian analyst who translated some of his works, 2 letters (26, 27) from Emma Jung to Baynes, 1940, telegram from Jung to Anne Baynes at the time of H G Baynes's death (28) and letters from Gerhard Adler to Anne Baynes, 1963-1967, about the publication of some of these letters in his edition of Jung's correspondence (29-33).

The letters include numerous topics of interest besides their general discussions of theory, practice, alchemy, etc: Jung's concern for and recommendations for treating Baynes's ulcer (1, 8), discussion of definitions and diagnosis of schizophrenia (2, 13), question of enabling German Jewish refugees to attend Congress of the International Society in 1938 ('any German refugee has a perfect right to attend our conference and to read a paper') ( 4), Jung's relations with Freud (5), observations on the contemporary political situation (9, Jan 1939), possibility of arranging for a 'half-Aryan' German Egyptologist to emigrate (17), Jung's perceptions of Swiss reactions to the European war and his own feelings on the subject (20-25).

According to the Sotheby's Sale Catalogue, these letters are all that survive of much more correspondence, which was destroyed in the fire at Baynes's home in 1938, mentioned in letter no. 3.

Papers of EF Griffith (PP/EFG ) include material relating to his Jungian analysis and subsequent own career as an analyst; GC/159 'Fundamental Psychological Conceptions: a report of five lectures by CG Jung' given in London in Oct 1935; MS 7042 includes Jung's response to Josef Strasser's questionnaire sent by him to leading scientists and psychoanalysts in 1930-1931 asking them to identify key decisions in their careers and to analyse the factors that affected those decisions. PP/FOR includes correspondence between Jung and Michael Fordham, British editor of his Collected Papers.
