Several of these figures are after plates illustrating the works of Reinier de Graaf on the male and female generative organs, with engravings done after his own drawings. Figures 3, 4, 5, 6 are from De Graaf's Tractatus de virorum organis generationi inservientibus, Leiden and Rotterdam 1668, plates I (fig. 3); III (figs 1-2); VIII. Figure 7 is from De Graaf's De Mulierum organis generationi inservientibus tractatus novus, Leiden 1672, plate XIII. The bladder of figure 2 is from plate XXXI of William Cheselden's Anatomy of the Body, London 1740, with etchings by Gerard Vandergucht. Figure 1 is from plate XII, fig. 1, of Giovanni Maria Lancisi's edition of the sixteenth-century plates prepared for the Italian anatomist Bartholomaeus Eustachius, first published in their entirety with Lancisi's commentary in the Tabulae anatomicae clarissimi viri Bartholomaei Eustachii quas e tenebris tandem vidicatas, Rome 1714
