These papers were received from Stallworthy's son Professor John Stallworthy and daughter Wendy Jennings in Feb 1994, with a few additional papers from Dr Ebrahim LK Seedat of Durban, South Africa, received via Jon Stallworthy in Aug 1994

Born in New Zealand in 1906, following graduation with distinction from the University of Otago, Stallworthy took up a two-year obstetric postgraduate travelling fellowship, and studied in Melbourne, London and Vienna, 1932-1938. In 1938 Professor Chasser Moir invited him to become his first assistant in the new Department of Obstetics and Gynaecology at Oxford Unviersity at the Churchill Hospital, where he was tasked with setting up an obstetric "flying squad". Following the establishment of the National Health Service he was responsible for organising an integrated obstetric team based at the Radcliffe Infirmary. He also did important work on the treatment of cervical carcinoma. He was a member of the council of the Medical Protection Society, serving as President 1969-1976. From 1981-1983 he chaired the British Medical Association working party on the medical consquences of nuclear war. He was President of the Royal Society of Medicine, 1973-1975 and 1980-1982 and President of the British Medical Association 1975. He received numerous honorary degrees and other honours and was knighted in 1972.
