Lettering continues: "A work of great difficulty which is being rapidly pushed forward, is the making of a road through the Malakand Pass, the scene so short a time since of one of the fiercest engagements in the Chitral campaign. The above sketch, taken in the neighbourhood of Khar, shows in the background the Swat River and Valley at the point where the 11th Bengal Lancers made their successful charge. Throughout the work, the Royal Engineers have been assisted by the natives, who may here be seen boring holes for blasting purposes, and at work on the enormous stone roller which has been hewn out of the grey granite found in the Pass."
