Presented by Michael Mosley, this is the second in a six-part series looking at the history of scientific discovery. This part features the material world and the story takes us from the secret labs of the alchemists with their search for gold, to the creation of the world's first synthetic dye, mauve. By answering the question of what the world is made up of, scientsits have created theories from elements to atoms, quantum physics and other concepts that now underpin our modern, technological world.
