About this work

Description

"Uprising is a word that can be found across time in archives, news reports, group texts, and more, meaning many things to different people. In this zine over 20 different artists, HIV activists, COVID-19 long haulers, friends, archivists, and freedom fighters share thoughts, feelings, and actions on what Uprising means to them. Through their collected images, short personal reflections, poetry, and more, no single idea of what an uprising is, or what a doula can do, is put forth. Rather, what emerges is a multifaceted testament to the power and experiences of communities dispossessed, othered, and marginalized across history, including in this time of pandemics, protests, and political strife."-- From WWHIVDD's website. https://hivdoula.work/coviddoula

Notes

This zine accompanies the exhibition "Metanoia: Transformation through AIDS Archives and Activism" held at One Institute, California, 17 January - 5 April 2020.
"What Would an HIV Doula Do? is a community of people joined in response to the ongoing AIDS Crisis. We understand a doula as someone who holds space during times of transition. We understand HIV as a series of transitions that begins long before being tested or getting a diagnosis, and continues after treatment. We know that since no one gets HIV alone, no one should have to deal with HIV alone. We doula ourselves, each other, institutions and culture. Foundational to our process is asking questions."--From WWHIVDD's website.
