Description
According to Laurinda Dixon, the couple are sitting on "self-service clyster[s] which appeared in the eighteenth century, consisting of a chairlike platform with the piston mounted at the front." (p. 35) She also suggests that for this old couple, the enema is acting as a surrogate for sexual activity
