About this work
Description
The third in a four-part series in which historian Ruth Goodman, Professor Nick Barber and PhD student Tom Quick recreate an authentic 19th-century pharmacy. In this part we see how the pharmacy enters a new period of laws and inventions as, in 1868, pharmacies were regulated by law for the first time and pharmacists went through tough examinations to become qualified. They also look at the world of poisons which were unregulated at that time, from arsenic to opium and explosives. This lack of restriction led pharmacists to invent matches and fireworks, to name a few products. The team end by putting on a Victorian style firework display.
