About this work
Description
"The Bethlem Wood Library is a research project working with Bethlem Gallery on the Mental Health and Justice Project. The Library is based on the Bethlem site and draws on historical archives and present explorations to make visible the value and potential inherent in the site and to demonstrate this through praxis. In the context of the Mental Health and Justice project, a prevailing theme is the idea that justice means having access to resources, signalling the political charge behind Bethlem Wood Library's practice. Their work centres on the often hidden potential of materials found in abundance there. A particular material's context and its singularity come to the forefront through their practice of mapping, plotting and surveying the larger picture and combining that with their detailed, intricate recording of hte material's minute properties. Each object becomes relatable, defined by its singularity and its context; the site on which it is found considered afresh."--Provided by Bethlem Wood Library.
This zine uses text from Gerrard Winstanley's A declaration from the poor oppressed (1649) and linoprint illustrations to argue for the right to the woods and land surrounding Bethlem Royal Hospital to belong to the Hospital and its patients.
