After a painting then in the collection of Samuel Rogers, having previously been in the Orleans and Henry Hope collections. According to the National Gallery catalogue (op. cit.), it it was acquired at Samuel Rogers's sale in 1856 by one R.J. Mackintosh (apparently Robert James Mackintosh (1806-1864), Governor of Antigua 1850-1855) and presented to the National Gallery, London, in 1906 by his daughter Eva Mackintosh (1843-1935)
