Dorsal Root Ganglion Serial Sections

95 individual sections cut in successive parallel planes from a dissected mouse dorsal root ganglion (DRG) are shown. DRG are collections of sensory nerve cells essential for perceiving the external environment. These structures are often studied in mouse models of peripheral nerve diseases, as their composition is similar to that of humans. Each section is 10 micrometers thick and follows on from the previous section, such that the entire DRG has been reconstructed and pseudo-coloured for effect. These images permit the counting of every single sensory nerve cell found in the DRG.
