    emphasized the great importance of the system of repressed forces called the unconscious; he had emphasized the symbolic expression of repressed factors in dream and in neurotic symptom; he had called attention to the early manifestations and the far-reaching significance of the sex life and of various pleasure-seeking tendencies; he had em¬ phasized the persistence in adult life of repressed childhood tendencies of which the individual him¬ self might not be conscious. The psychosis or the adaptation of the psychotic individual to the life situation was not the adaptation of a schematized personality of conventional type, it was the re¬ action of this real system of forces; its complicated components only to be adequately surveyed with a great expenditure of time. The personality could not be resolved into a series of physiological fac¬ tors, nor be adequately studied by a mere survey of the overt traits and reactions; it had to be grasped as a very complex system of forces which bore within it the traces of its early conditioning. The analysis of the individual personality meant the careful and unusually detailed reconstruction of a life history. The interest of the psychiatrist in the system¬ atic classification of cases was thus to a large ex¬ tent supplanted by interest in studying the dynamic
