Description
"Greek drawing. The general resemblance of this drawing to the miniatures we meet with in the manuscripts of the tenth or eleventh century, gives us the greatest reason to suppose it the work of that time; and the Greek writing in various places, corroborates the idea of its being by one of those masters who were called from Constantinople by the republic of Florence; for it is not likely that the Greek language should have been familiar to an Italian painter ; nor was any but the Latin ever used for the purpose of inscription, on the works of art. The drawing is executed with that freedom of handling and fixed manner, that its extreme hardness rather proves the ignorance of the times, than want of ability in the artist."—Metz, op. cit. p. 5
